I have a 2002 Excursion with the manual locking hubs plus the shift switch inside the truck. When I attempt to switch from 2wd to 4Hi, I hear no engagement of the drive nor do I see a visual confirmation with color showing on the switch that it is even working. I checked the fuses and those are good, so any other ideas that I can try would be greatly appreciated. Help....
If you are switching to 4Hi and there is no light coming on in the dash cluster indicating 4Hi, then your transfer case shift motor is likely bad.
They are known to fail on these trucks... I replaced mine last year and had the new one fail on me this year (thankfully it had a 12 month warranty).
Easy enough to check, just unbolt the shift motor and get someone to try engaging the 4 Hi switch so you can see if the arm is moving or not. When you get the new one plug it in and test it before mounting into the transfer case so if it happens to be something else, like the switch, you can box it up and return it.
When you sort out if it is the motor, you can also reach in behind the front tires and see if you can rotate the axle shaft. With 4X4 engaged they should not rotate like when unlocked. Another site most on here use is http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/maint.php for the lube of the hubs. He covers lots of other stuff for maint.
What is the benefit of locking the hubs when putting it in 4X4? The other day I got stuck in some mud and just put it in 4Low and went, then put it back in two wheel drive when I was out of danger. Is there a benefit for locking the hubs over just leaving them at automatic when 4 wheel drive is engaged?

Don't mean to hijack the thread....
The stock hub lock feature is just for emergencies in case the ESOF doesn't work. I keep my ESOF working good so I don't need aftermarket hubs and never need the locking feature.
