"C" code vs "W" code transmissions

I see where both are 5 speed transmissions and I have a ZF "C" code in a truck I have. I'm thinking of getting another truck that has 4.10 rearend and only a 4 speed. I see where the "W" transmission is a "H.D." transmission. Does anyone know where I can find the ratio's for the "W" series H.D. transmissons? I'd like to maybe convert the 4 speed to a 5 speed or else use an 2 speed box such as gear vendor.

The ratios for my heavy duty ZF 5spd (don't know if its a W code or not) in my '97 are as follows.

1st - 5.72:1
2nd - 2.94:1
3rd - 1.6?:1
4th - 1:1
5th - 0.76:1
R - 5.?:1

There is also a close ratio transmission that was available with the diesels. I don't know those ratios off the top of my head but they are not much different.

"C" code vs "W" code transmissions

LAST EDITED ON 29-Oct-01 AT 06:00 PM (EST)[p]Other than ratios and bell housings they're both the same tranny. The close ("C" code) ratio ZF S5-47 is for diesel engined F-Series trucks over 8500GVW, the "W" is for gasoline powered. Both have an integral bell housing, so it may not be possible to fit a "W" box designed for other engines, I have NO idea what the diesel mounting pattern looks like. According to the 96 factory shop manual the "C" ratios are:

1st: 5.08
2nd: 2.60
3rd: 1.53
4th: 1.00
5th: 0.77
Rev: 4.66

Other years may or may not vary, this is the only info I have. It's basically not enough different from the wide ratio to be worth the aggravation of adapting it. The W version is available in both small-block (300 and 351) and big block (460) bolt patterns

There is a neat chart at the U.S Gear website showing the effects of a overdrive or underdrive auxillary transmission in terms of final drive ratio. http://www.usgear.com/dr_ratio.htm
So it appears that the "heavy duty" 5 speed as noted in the axle decoding article at this website is simply the diesel version of the ZF which wouldn't fit in my truck or at least wouldn't be a big improvement in reducing engine speed. It looks like the NV4500 would have good ratio's with a lower overdrive and similar first gear. I've read where there is a company that makes a adapter (advance adapters?) to hook up a NV4500 with a 460 or diesel. That, plus an overdrive would have me doing 65 at hmmmmmmm maybe 1400 RPM's.. Quick guess without any mathmatics.
Thanks for the input,
Tony G
