This is a copy paste but it describes my issue pretty closely. I have not had it die while going down the road, but it will die occasionally while idling in the driveway.
If you are having problems with your ford f250 or bigger not starting *such as acts like the battery is dead when you turn the key, dies after short time of running, check gauge light, service wrench, check engine light, or you see -- on the screen, dies going down the road, check relay 303. Relay 303 is the fuel pump relay and will cause all kinds of trouble for you. TAP THE RELAY WHILE THE TRUCK IS RUNNING IF THE TRUCK DIES THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM.
I also when to the Dealer to buy a relay for the fuel pump and they gave me a small rectangle relay, all the documentation I have indicates the Fuel Pump relay is the bigger square. So either the Ford Dealer gave me the wrong thing or I don't know where to locate the Fuel Pump relay.
My F250 is acting up a little. IT has 165k miles on it and its not always starting. Sometimes the "Wait to Start" light will go off and it will work just fine. Other times it will go off and the check engine light will come on. When this happens I think the relay for the fuel pump is flipping and the fuel pump stops. I bought an OBD scanner and when I can for codes there are none. I do have something wierd though, when I turn the key to on without starting the truck and scan for VIN info with the scanner, the instant I initiate the scan , the check engine light comes on. IT does this every time. Maybe my PCM is bad? Any thoughts?
This is the info from your thread in the SD forum, for the guys here to mull over.
The fuel pump relays (there are 2 of them) are in the dash, behind and to the left of the radio. There is a roughly 2.5"x2.5" black relay box, inside you will find 2 small black rectangular relays, these are the fuel pump relays. You will also find a larger square blue relay which controls your flashers - in case you ever need to know.
Should be an easy fix if it is truely your relays.
Got to the fuel pump relays, replaced both of them. Also replaced the PCM relay in the relay box under the hood. Didn't solve the problem.
Sometimes when I turn the key on I get dim lights on the dash, mainly, water in fuel and cruise....then check engine comes on. The other lights go off. I checked the voltage to the fuel pump when check engine light is on, and there is nothing. When the truck is running I am getting 13 volts at the fuel pump.
When I walked away it was starting and running perfectly. Something somewhere is "loose"
No power to the fuel pump with the check engine light on means the truck should stall (due to no fuel).
I'd check the main engine wiring harness that comes up and over the drivers side valve cover. See if the wires have been rubbing against the valve cover below the square box with a bolt in the middle (42 pin connector) or if the wires coming out of the back of the box have been rubbing against the bracket.
Do you have a chip in your truck? A loose chip can cause similar issues.
