drive train upgrade.
This is my first post so please forgive my wordiness. I'm in the process of restoring my '79 f-350 4x4 supercab. It has a 400, np435 trans.,np205 transfer case and 3.54 in the Dana 60's. i'm running 33' tires on it. I would like to get an overdrive in it so I can get some decent mileage by taking advantage of the low rpm torque of the engine (I know, I know thats a reletive term) when I'm running empty (80% of the time). I'm aware of 2 ways of achieving this. Conversion to a ZF trans. or going with a Gear Vendor's overdrive unit.I'm hedging towards the od unit since I like the servce the original drive train has given me (265,000+ mi.). My question is the motor/spring shifting mechinisim. Is it durable enough to withstand constant shifting like going from 3rd direct to 3rd od then to 4th direct under aload(16,000 lbs. gcvw)? The planned output of the 400 is 350-400hp and 450-500 lbs. torque.Any comments or opinions are welcomed.
