So I've chatted with a few Muffler shops about puttin on a aftermarket muffler (Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Wicked Flow) all but one wants to sell me new pipe, the claim is I have 2 7/8" pipe (looks 3" to me) and I should upgrade to 3" a diff of $220 to $350 with stainless tip. I have 19K miles is all on the truck so the pipe is like new is there really the need to upgrade pipe to 3"?
No, you do not need new pipe. The new pipe they install would probably be aluminized, which is a downgrade from the stock stainless pipe, and it would be crush bent unless they are ordering a kit of by chance or happen to have their own mandrel bender, which unless they are a top end shop, is quite unlikely. Some trucks do use a 2.75" pipe (2 3/4") which is actually a very good size, but the shop will need to make an adapter. Not to difficult.
05 5.4L Supercab Superduty.
Gracias, Bear River. How does the Wicked Flow compare to Flowmaster and Magnaflow? I ran a Magnaflow on a 02 6.0l Chev and a 99 Light Superduty 4.6l both had a good deep mellow tone.
the one thing it may do, is actually be a true 3". on my diesel, going to a 4" not only gave me the inch (useful on the 7.3L diesel) but it's mandrel bent, so it's 4" anyplace you measure, it doesn't "pinch" at any corner, and sometimes (like my stock pipe) around the spare tire they squished the stock one. Not saying you need it or not, just adding information.
Have you done any improvements on the "in" side? I have upgraded to a 6637, a very large filter with way less restriction from stock. Again, not saying you need this, but there's no reason to do "out" without doing "in". also, a very worthwhile mod to the 7.3L intercooled turbo diesel, so there's a big diff there between you and I. Hope this helps!
Si is good advice, I'm in the process of locating one of these AFE ProDryS filters, I've run K&N in the past and didn't notice any difference. The outside diameter of my stock pipe is 3" the shop that told me it was 2 7/8 didn't throw a tape up to it, unless a true 3" is the inside diameter??? I'll take a look at the pipe again to determine if there is any pinched or crushed points.
In my case, on my 7.3L, the 3" stock is also about 2 2/7 and my new 4" is also really about 3 7/8. 1" makes a huge difference, 1/8" isn't going to do much.
here's a photo of my pipes showing diameter difference, too bad i didn't throw a tape on them when measuring, one loooks 1/2 the size, but its just an illusion (but there is still a huge difference in airflow). Again, i've got the 7.3L turbo diesel, so there's a big difference in my exhaust needs. i actually don't know anyone personally that has a larger exhaust on their V10. I would trust people on here that have tried it, over asking the muffler shops that just want to make money. Backpressure may be a big issue in a V10, most modded diesels don't require much backpressure, it's all about getting it in and out for that turbo to spin-up fast.
