I just bought an 87 F 250 that someone had put a newer (as in 88 or 89) EFI 5.8 in. It ran fine for a week or so, then, as I was leaving the parking lot of the local HD, it stopped, just like I turned the key off, bang, dead in the water. I have been researching things and trying to find out what the problem is. The person who did the engine swap, used some of the old wiring harness, and ran some new wires etc. so running things down has been a challenge. So, a couple of questions. 1. What type of head is on the TFI module attached to the distributer? I can't see into the tiny hole to figure out how to get the thing off. Does the distributor need to come out? 2. There is no spark to the plugs, but also, the fuel pump is not running. Any connection there?
If the fuel pumps are not running either then do not worry about the spark right now.
I would look first at the Ignition switch as it sounds like you are not getting power to the Ignition coil or the EEC Power Relay. Make sure this relay clicks before you dive any deeper in to anything.
Hey, I've got an 89 F250 diesel. I think the ignition switch is out, but I'm not sure where it is located. Is it under the dash or inside the steering column? Lock cylendar seems to be fine, but moving key to off, accessory, start positions just doesn't do anything. That is to say it still feels right. It doesn't just roll over smoothly like it would if the actuator were broken. Ignition switch seems to be the logical thing to replace. Lights, locks, etc still work. It's just anything that is on with the key that doesn't work. Obviously turning it to start position does not do anything either. Thanks.
i just had the same thing happen, coil had power but no spark and no fuel pump, and the tach was all over the place. after changing the coil and dist. i started looking at the conectors on the inner fender behind the air box with the key on, and every time i moved the harnes i herd the fuel relay clicking. long story short, the wire rubed through, corroded and fell appart. if you lift, turn and look at the bottom of the harness closest the drivers fender between the air box and hood spring, there is a fuseable link sticking out of the harness, just in front of that is where the inner fender has a little bump, on mine it had a green stain, so i had to disconect some stuff so i could twist the harness enough to see the little f-er. runs better than ever now.
