Neighbor has a 1995 cc long bed with 7.3 turbo. manual 5 speed. says it is chipped, with egt. and turbo boost gauges. 240,160 miles. looks pretty clean has been used pulling 5th wheel trailers hauling heavy loads. he's asking 5,000. for it.
I know nothing about these diesels except people seem to like the 7.3. what are some of the things to check for on this type of rig? After reading all the good on Ford diesels I would really like one to pull my 5er, just don't want to spend a lot of unexpected money in repairs. any suggestions? and is the manual trans, better than the auto. I am an auto lover so need input on this manual..Power steering pump is only thing that looked oily and it hasn't been started in several mths. serpantine pulleys are rusty where the belt runs.Should I stay away from a rig with this many miles?Think I read about hpop should be rebuilt ever so many miles but couldn't find that info.
Check for service records reg.oil changes. Manual tranny good. The automatic is the weak link for this truck unless u have a good one built by BTS, or RACERX. My truck has 225K and it is a 97 lots of guys don't start doing mods till this kind of mileage cause the trucks are so hard to find. Just my .02
i just bought my 97 with 328,000 miles on it and it has a 5 speed manual, on the manual trannys you have to check the clutchlinkage to the master, there is a plastic bushing in there that wears out and wont disengage the clutch all the way and cause shifting problems, or atleast that was how mine was, i fixed mine for free but you can by the ford " permanent clutch fix" off ebay for like 40 bucks and never have to do anything about it again... the other thing on these trucks is the CPS (cam position sensor) go out pretty frequent... i keep a spare in the glove box ... takes ten min to change with a 10 mm socket ... other than that 5000 sounds like a good price and its already set up for towing from what it sounds like ..... the only thing i would do tho is get a oil sample and send it off to the lab for testing to make sure there arent any un expected supprises in the enging ... the oil sample will give you a break down on metal content in the engine in parts per million ... i sample mine every time i change the oil .... Hope you buy the truck and good luck!
I wouldn't worry about mileage... check on service records and maybe have someone look it over for any big problems. Take the intake tube off and look inside the turbo, make sure there's no play in the turbo wheel
Thanks for the tips, I plan to hook it up to my 5er and pull a couple of local hills to compare it to my 460 and see the difference, I also pull an oil sample and check the turbo and clutch linkage, anything else you can think of?I'll try and get some pics. up. I havn't learned how to do any of that stuff yet got to find one of the grand kids..lol..
i had a carbed 460 and it was a dog, it was a fun truck but the 7.3 blows this out of the water, youll have a blast with the diesel, the 7.3 has wayyy more ***** than the 460 had terrible mileage, and this motor lightly modded you can see 15-19 miles pergallon and lug heavier loads
