My father-in-laws 2004 F-150 5.4 Lariat has a wierd problem.
When you take off, the truck is ok. But like if you slow down a little, the transmission is like I don't know, not changing to the right gear or something. IT's like lagging or not going like it should.
BUT if you give it a bit more gas, it JUMPS and then goes. If you KEEP on the gas from a stand still, it shifts thru all the gears fine. But you know how stop and go is in the city. It started doing this within the last 2 months or so.
It even does this at speeds around 45mph and higher too.
THe transmission fluid is fine.
It has 100K miles. Been serviced as the book calls for.
Could they have possibly put in the wrong transmission filter? It was done at a Ford service center tho when the filter and fluid was changed back earlier.
mine has done something similar since I bought. . .usually does it around the neighborhood at ~25 mph. . .it's either shifting into OD or the converter is locking up or something. . .and as you drive around in that 23-28 mph zone it tends to drop and slab back into that gear or mode as you apply pedal. . .
my fix? I turn overdrive off till I hit the blvd. . .drives fine then. If I get to driving slow due to traffic or neighborhood, I hit OD. It's second nature now, and hasn't done that in years
Probably not a real fix, but didn't cost me a dime
I tried what you said. It did make a difference, as the problem happened less with O/D off. But it still done it slightly during low speeds (25mph give or take), but not ALL the time now.
Check the fluid in the tranny. The 04 and 05s are bad about dumping the transmission fluid into the transfercase. Bad seal, but they have a newly designed one to replace it now. Don't put it off it could save you a bunch of $$$$. My 04 did the same thing. If it is low, drain the excess from the tcase (by removing fill plug) then add some transmission fluid. Remember to check the fluid when temp is up with the engine running.
I got to mine in time. Dealer priced the seal replacement in the tcase at around $350 I think. Part was only Like $19. That's a small price to pay compared to a burned up transmission though. I got a local garage with a lift to put mine in. Only charged $65 for the install.
I haven't checked the fluids myself, but my father-in-law said he did.
I'll do it myself to make sure. Sounds like you may have something worth checking into.
Thanks alot.
