I filled both tanks on my 95 F-150 EFI yesterday and I added a bottle of Chevron With Techron complete fuel system cleaner. I know that this is one of the only cleaners that is safe to use on my bike. I am however wondering if the smell is just the rear tank being leaky for some reason or because the cleaner ate the lines. This is the first time I have used the rear tank. I don't see a puddle of gas anywhere so I know its not a big leak (if leak it is). This is my first truck and I bought it on the 19th so I'm not used to it yet. Engine and trans are bone stock with 120,000 miles, I believe that it has a some type of loud muffler. (I don't know what) I am trying to squeeze better mileage out of it so I added the fuel system cleaner and replaced the K&N filter with the stock unit (I have never had a K&N filter that didn't hurt my mileage) I'm going to upgrade to an MSD Blaster Coil and better plugs & wire. I'd like to return the exhaust to stock too. Thoughts on smells and mileage numbers would be appreciated.
I have a '96 with dual tanks and if I have both tanks full and run on the rear tank, sometimes the return line pumps into the front tank, causing it to pressure up and leak out the cap.I think this is due to a bad shuttle valve in the front pump not closing. So I never run the rear first with both full.It could also happen the other way around, not saying that this is your problem, just letting you know what happened to me.
Check your fuel pump...it might be going out and pumping gas in to the crankcase which will dilute your oil and take out the bottom end in short order. You can smell gas but pull your hair out trying to find a leak. Ask me how I know.
He should have a FDM type pump in each tank, but I know what you mean about a mechanical pump putting gas in the crankcase,I've seen it,fortunantly not on my vehicle.I've heard of old diesels having a seal go on the fuel pump and take off running on crankcase oil so there was no way to shut them down.Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants!
