I have a 1968 F100 with the six cyl. 240 (soon to be 300) and a NP435 tranny with a 3.73 rear and 28in tires. I use it a lot on the freeways and would like to lower my crusing rpm's which right now are about 3100 rpm at 65mph. A friend gave me his dad's toploader 3sp-OD transmission and bell-housing from an econoline van that also had a six in it and I was wondering if anyone has done a switch like this before and where can I get a gear shift set-up that would fit a truck with a bench seat. I could change out the rear-end but I like the acceleration it provides, any advice out there. Thanks!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-01 AT 05:55 PM (EST)]1. Measure your present NP435 setup, distance from rear of bellhousing to centerline of shift tower on the top cover.
2. Do the same with the OD transmission.
3. Measure back from the bellhousing the distance for the shift lever for the OD transmission--this will tell you where the new shift lever will poke through, and I betcha it will be enough in front of the bench seat to clear it.
4. Imagine a centerline from front to rear of both transmissions, input shaft to output shaft, and mark that on the case so you can reference it. Measure from that mark to the foot on the trans tailpiece, and then to the bottom of the trans mount. If those measurements are the same, cool.
5. Measure the distance apart the trans mount bolts holes are at, both tailshaft and crossmember--betcha they're the same.
6. Measure transmission package length, both trannies, front bellhousing face to centerline of output yoke. If there's a difference in length, that is how much you get to lengthen or shorten the driveshaft.
Eddie,
No shifter came with the trans, it still has the arms coming out of the side but no linkage. I need something that would come out of the topcover like the NP435 or at least allow me to retain my bench seat.
Thanks,
Craig.
