Tranny problems

I've got a 91 F-250 with a 7.3 Diesel and I'm having issues with the tranny not shifting into low and not shifting smooth at times. When I stop it doesn't go into low and wants to start in 2nd. Also won't shift down sometimes when pulling something and will get hot and start pucking out tranny fluid.
When this happens, I've noticed that the tachometer will also quit working simultaniously. Does the the tach have anything to do with the tranny shifting? Through the ECM?
It does this very speratically. This is driving me nuts, plus can't be good on the tranny.

Thanks!

You are right, it is not good for the transmission.
the E4OD needs input from several sensors including, the Range Sensor (connected to the shift lever), the Throttle Position Sensor, the Tach and the Vehicle Speed Sensor.
I would assume your O/D light is blinking, if so, you need to get the codes read at a transmission shop to try to identify the faulty sensor.
