Hi all, new to the forum. Does anybody have any experience with how much is a fair price for an overhaul on a '91 E40D trans? I've been quoted $2000-2500. Is this about right? Trans shop says they upgrade the trans to improve life.
I had my 94 E4OD rebuilt with upgraded torque converter, high volume pump, best clutches, new valve body etc and a towing shift kit. My cost with all labor included was about $2500 in 98?99?
A lot depends on what needs to be replaced. If you need new gears or a planetary cluster... probably better to buy one off the shelf.
If you do the labor yourself, it is probably not a bad idea to buy a remanufactured unit from a reputable supplier. One of these days I really need to learn to rebuild a tranny. I can fix just about anything else but never got a round to doing a tranny.
Thanks for the info. The shop is supposedly doing what you mentioned with an upgraded torque converter, and I supplied them a TransGo shift kit for them to install. BTW, they said that they feel the TransGo is the best kit on the market (guess I got lucky?) but I don't know what other types they have experience with. If a customer walked in and asked for a shift kit, they would use the TransGo.
