Heres what im thinking...393 stroker time.

Ok, heres the basic outline of what im planning on building here. I just sent out the 351 block for machining and will be ordering the 393 kit shortly.

Now, for the combo im thinking of..

393 balanced rotating assembly, the kit im choosing will put the compression ratio between 9.6:1-10:1

-edelbrock performer rpm aluminum heads, with the 1.90/1.60" valves, 170cc intake/60cc exhaust runner, 60cc combustion chambers.

Cam: what would be a good cam for this application? i want good low end power, and something that would give me a good powerband from 1500rpm to somewhere around 5500 rpm, maybe 6000rpm tops.

I was thinking of using the lightning gt40 intake, but, i have the option to buy a trickflow r series for about 100$ more. Would the trickflow intake be worth it?

Suggestions? comments?

For what its worth, this will be backed up by a tko 5 speed manual trans.

It would be greatly appreciated if someone could give me a desktop dyno reading on this, but no big deal if not.

either that or use the same heads on a fresh 351 stuffed with forged rods and pistons, and boost it later on down the road. what do you think would be a better idea?

anyone have any opinions on the 393 setup? would those heads be too restrictive even with a little porting? what cam would be a good fit?

There is a thread buried deep in this forum that's about 1000 posts long detailing another user's 393 experience. The title was something along the lines of "Went to see the engine builder" or something and it was started by MustangGT221. You should check it out, there is a ton of useful information in that thread.

Edit: found it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...e-builder.html

I replied to your post earlier today but the site took a dump right when I was posting and obviously it got lost. I think the GT40 is too small for a stroker but it would make for a tq happy motor. I ran a couple dyno sims and the thing could produce 500 ft lbs down low no problem with the right cam, but it'll only make about 300hp. With a cam more appropriate for the displacement it makes over 400hp and still manages 450 ft lbs TQ. On paper the Eddy heads look good but I have seen several motors underperform with them and there are similar complaints floating around on other forums. It seems the AFR and TFS heads perform better out of the box. I'll post up the sims later when I get a chance.

Hmm, thats pretty interesting. really puts it into perspective how much of a difference a cam can make.

Wink

This is how I built my `90 F-150. Put the 351 coil springs w/sway bars on, re-arched the leaf springs while adding an extra leaf and rear sway bar, 351 bored .031 over, decked and line honed the block, Eagle stroker kit, w/Trick-Flow (Probe) pistons, 9.66:1 compression before the decking of the block ,TF O-ring heads ,ported/polished , Edelbrock 5.8 EFI intake,ported/polished, BBK dual 61mm throttle body,FRPP MAF conversion kit,KN air cleaner , Accel 30 lb injectors,9 qt. oil pan, windage tray, hv oil pump(60 lbs), Hedman long tube headers, 3" Terminator mufflers MSD digital 6,dist/HVC 2 coil,Comp roller cam,580/585 lift,Comp gold roller rockers,255 lph intank fuel pumps, adjustable fuel reg, HD radiator, TCI Super Street Fighter trans. stock 3.55`s rear(for now).Basicly it`s a mild race engine that is not intended for every day driving or long trips,it`s loud and just plain rude on the street. But I was planning to put it in a Mustang in the future so thats why I did it. If you need your truck for your main transportation you would be wise to be on the conservitive side and build your engine for dependability and low end torque.

Im building it for my 90 crown vic, which is equally as heavy as the truck though. itll be backed up by a tko 5 speed manual trans and some 3.73s out back. My engine builder thinks i should go with a 408 instead though, but quick question. How many miles do you have on the 393 so far?

Matter of fact I just changed the oil the other day @ 3000 mi. and one of the jugs of oil I bought from Walmart had the cap superglued on because someone put used motor oil in it.The manager thought I was trying to scam him when I took it back.
