New-Old VIN #
The Camaro subframe replaced the original section of the frame that contained the VIN #. Of course, the firewall and glovebox plates are long gone.
I have the VIN # that was passed down through the documentation from previous owners (from before the subframe conversion was done).
Does anyone know where I can order replacement plates, and if it is legal to do this?
I forget where, but you can order a copy plate all embossed with the truck stock info and your serial number if you provide a copy of the title or registration. It depends on the state, but I do not believe it is illegal. The cost at last discussion was $125. I think it's Mid-fifties- not sure.
You might call this guy as a start:
Tags Backeast, Trim Tags Backeast, Data Plates, A.G.Backeast. We make tags for AMC, Buick, Cadillac, Camaro, Chevelle, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Corvette, Dodge, DeSoto, Edsel, Ford, Frazer, La Salle, Henry J, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury, Mustang, Oldsmobile
I also have a source in San Diego where the gentleman will make a set from scratch, but frankly it's a hassle (he does great work but takes forever - two weeks turns into four months, never calls - you know the type). If you get REALLY REALLY stuck, send me a PM.
Here are a couple saved links I have:

Here are my new ones (51 F1):
You do have it registered in your name, right?

Usually, when dealing with any authority that you might be asking to just to do their job, ………….. it is much less stress to ask for forgiveness latter then permission now.
