A/C quits under load

In my 03 Exp. 4.6 4x4. This just started this week. When I go to accelerate my air moves from the vents to the defrost vents when I back off the accelerator it moves back to the correct vents. It blows cool but not cold when it is in the defrosters but then blows cold again when it comes back to the correct vents. What would cause this it is strange to me. Even going down the hiway if it is under load it acts up as soon as it is not loaded it blows just fine as if nothing were wrong. Anybody got any ideas. I called the dealership and they only said to bring it in they had no idea. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's a leaking check valve in the main vacuum line that feeds the HVAC system.

OK that makes sense to me how hard is that to fix? Can a normal person do it with normal tools or do I need to take it to an a/c specialist?

Probably and easy fix. Vacuum lines run from the firewall just behind the battery. Vacuum canister is mounted on the fender just behind the battery. Trace the vacuum lines from the firewall to the canister and the vacuum source from the engine. The check valve is a small plastic in line device that looks like a small kids toy. I will bet you'll find a failure in one of the lines (not the check value), usually due to the proximity to the battery. Replace the hoses as needed with proper vacuum hose. Search the AC forum and you'll find more information on this issue. I had the same on my 2003 and it took about 20 minutes to find and fix.

I can do that. I'll check it out this weekend. Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what I find.
