I have a 99 and the a/c was doing the same thing. When it got hot last summer, I paid the money and got a new compressor installed. The guy recommended about 3 other parts for the a/c as well as new hoses and belts.
I think one of the other parts was some kind of tube that helps squeeze the gas back into a liquid and some kind of filter. Both usually got filled with metal when the compressor starts to go. I think that he said that the Ford compressors were not heavy duty units like some others he mentioned-mechanic talk. The a/c work cost about $1200.
I have a 2000 F250 and the A/C is not getting cold. the freon checks good. the compresser kicks off and on.
Please advise?
First off, assuming you have checked the freon level with a set of gages and the cycle time on and off is not back to back but has a substantial gap in between, you may be having problems with the heater core blend door not closing all the way and letting hot air mix with the cold.
I have heard of some taking the time to install a cut-off valve in-line the heater hose under the hood to stop the hot air flow during the summer.
Possible the compressor may be freezing? I had a similar problem on my Jeep, the compressor would freeze up and start blowing slightly warm air until it unfroze, then it would get cold again. This would also cause the compressor to cycle on and off as it froze and thawed.

This sounds like what happened when I was having a/c problems with my 92 f250. I had a vacuum leak in a rubber hose that was allowing some gate to open in my heater. A friend spliced in a piece of hose and the problem went away.
My a/c was not as good as I thought it should be. I knew my condenser was not in good shape, lots of the fins were mushed in. I replaced that and installed a new orifice tube and dryer, did a complete draw-down and recharge. It still did not work worth a crap. After some investigating, I found that the evaporator core was PLUGGED with hair. Whoever had the truck before me must have carried his pooch with him all the time. The truck was just full of dog hair, never thought the core would be too. Anyway, 4 hours later, I got ignorant cold air and lots of air flow.
