Tranny overhaul
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Dec-01 AT 01:30 PM (EST)]I was wondering how difficult is it to completely overhaul a BW T-18. Is this something that a guy with no manual tranny experience can do, or is it better left to the pros? What kinda cash am I lookin at spending?

Tranny overhaul
I went through an NP435 (Ford's T-18, alternate 4-spd., granny-low box) last winter, never having done a transmission before.
It was dirt simple, and this guy was a joy to deal with: Mike P.@ www.standardtransmissionandgear.com. The bearing and gasket kit cost a whole whopping $50.00; a new 3-4 synchro was $75.00; and if I'd known such a thing was available, I would have bought the "small parts kit" which ran around $50.00 for the NP205 transfer case I overhauled at the same time (it was super-simple, too).
Get some rotary wire-wheel brushes for your drill motor and clean the exterior up nicely, paint it black, and amaze all your friends!
I can't imagine the T-18 not being easy, either. Some hints: take your time, be really clean and oily, photocopy T-18 pages from any '70's Ford Truck Service Manual from your library and then put them in some plastic sheets in a 3-ring binder, and drink coffee, not beer!
