Hey all, Its been a while since I been on. I been on the road for over a month now. I just got home and went to my brothers, On the way over their driving and idling the truck has a hum... Like a PTO would have. The higher the RPM the hum gets faster. Not really loud or high pitched. I dunno just sounds like a hydrolic pumping or a PTO. Im trying to think of something else to describe it but i really cant lol... It runs fine short of very minor problems, And it seems like the sound is comming from the engine compartment..
Oh and the fuel guage quit if the means anthing..
Thanks alot guys. Oh the truck is a 1987 F150 302 auto 4x4
lol! Im think some pulley is going out... I wanted to fix it before tomorrow, I have a around trip of 900 miles tomorrow, we will find out what breaks... God I hope not...
I never thunk of the PS pump.. Thanks guys. As for the belt its less than 2 months old, just changed it before I left for the road. .. And the fan does move freely. I made a few turns with it and it was smooth the hole time..
A loud Ps pump something to worry about? Or just fly with it?
it will be fine. i remember when i first joined this forum back in 07 there was a lot of talk about it and an upgrade to a different one that was queter its just how they are made guess ford figured these were gonna be work trucks so whats a little whine gonna matter. should hold up fine check the fluid level in it if its good dont worry bout it to much mines been whining since day one and still works.
If you think it is a pulley get a mechanics stethoscope (they are inexpensive) and listen to the alternator power steering pump etc and see if that is what it is.
i have a wine in my 4 spd tranny it sounds like a muncie tranny but only in 1-2-3 4th gear is quiet as can be my philosophy is when it breaks ill fix it somehow lol
If it sounds like a hydraulic pump, it could be the steering pump, but I usually only hear that when I'm turning.
But yes, it is a common Ford feature, the heifers a neighbor had at my place were trained to come to the feed stanchions when they heard his old ~'87 F-150 turn in. Then they'd start hollering... which was fine, until we took our older F-250(which actually didn't have that whine) off the road, and put a similar truck to his on, which sounded exactly the same. Then every time I moved the truck, or came and left, the heifers would think it was feeding time.
