I have a 1994 F-150 XL
4.9l
Automatic / Overdrive
2x4
Ok now, It has 230,4xx miles as of tonight, and in the last month (The first full month of ownership) I have so far replaced:
Distributor Cap-W/ Brass Tabs
Rotary Button-W/ Brass Tabs
Spark Plugs- Autolites' Gapped to 0.44" Like Haynes bok said to.
And so far gas mileage has increased from 200/220 MPT to around 240/260 MPT w/ mixed driving, is there beeter MPG's for me or is that around the best I can get?
*Note
I still need to replace Spark Plug Wires and Fuel Filter
--------------------------------------------
Now since the truck can at any time take a **** and die basically, and in the event of said problem whats a list of mods to perform WITHOUT boring the block, or really deep stuff?
i really wanna say oversized tires for highway, not so much street. bigger tire=slower rpms cruise. headers would give a *slight* gain over EFI manifolds and thats about the only mod than a cold air intake or re route the intake to the opening beside the radiator. cam change is the only major thing you can do other than a port/polish of the head. If your truck dosent need to be bored, dont do it.
what size tank do you have? i get around 200 miles per tank with mine 16gal. tank (60l tank) or roughly 12 mpg , mine has 210*** miles and a leaky head gasket among other small problems
you could try replacing your O2 sensor but just check it first if it aint broke dont fix it
also set your timing, its sposda be at 10* BTDC...but id set it to 12*BTDC for better performance not sure how it would affect your mpgs though
electric fans are also a pretty big help for mpgs since the engine doesnt have to work to turn the fan anymore

There is no one answer to this question. You should be able to dignose your truck yourself and decide what it needs and how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go or need to go.
I am PRETTY sure the front tank is a 18-19 gallon.........
And if given miracle precision in my calculations and perfection mileage, etc: I am getting roughly 13-15mpg.....just a estimate...
And BTW the intake is ALREADY ran beside the radiator, would relocating it to ABOVE the radiator help?
I have a '96 XL 2WD 5seed stick with 2.73 rear gear and when I go to my house in the UP of Mich.,it's 300 to the bridge and I always cross the bridge still on my front 19 gal. tank. That is cruising 75 mph on the freeway.I put a K&N air element in it and a tano cover on the box and did notice about 1 mpg better, right after I got the truck. My truck has 160,000 on it.I'm fixing an air leak at the intake manifold, but the truck got that milage before the air leak happened, although it's hard to say if it was leaking a little before. Some of the mpg I've noticed on this forum seems kind of bad,but the lower gears they run and other things may be why.
Unfortunately most trucks don't cut through the air very well. Make sure your front air dam is intact. It made a difference on all of my trucks both in MPG (1-2) and high speed noise and handling. Tire size and tread also have an influence on MPG.
My old 94 reg cab 300 5 spd 235/15/75 tires and 3.55s got a solid 20 almost 21 MPG hauling 400lbs @60 MPH. At 70+ and empty it would get 19.5. I keep my trucks in good tune and have a dash mounted vacuum gauge.
My current 95 SC has 3.08s and cruises easier at 70 than the 94. I haven't had a chance to take any long trips with the 95 but it gets about 1 MPG less in suburban driving than the 94, 18.5-17.5. My 7 year old grandson likes to calculate the MPG.

I'm agreeing with Rikard, sounds like my truck all over, mine is a'96 standard cab with a long bed and I had a piece crack off my air dam,so I took it off and last time on trip it did a little worse on mileage, not a lot,but he's right about aerodynamics and I believe my tano cover helps it get over the tail gate.I also run 235/15/75 tires at 35# in front and 40# in the rear,it takes more juice to run those big 31/10.5's and such,if your running high speed highway stuff you got to cut the wind and and turn leaner tires if you want mileage.
