So.. My new / old 1966 F-250 has been running fine. Suddenly.. it stalls.. It will start (runs a bit rough...) but as soon as I accelerate.. it stalls. HELP! Any idea what I should look at? Thanks guys!
I agree, check all your fuel system. Vents, fliter(s), pump, etc. If there seems to be good flow to the carb, maybe check the float/needle and seat. You may also want to have a look at the points. In your position, I think it's a safe bet to really get to the basics. Make sure you have good spark and fuel, then work from there. I'm guessing it's a simple matter, though.
Same as above, but on a new/old truck you probably would benefit from just rebuilding the carb. Usually only amounts to $20 and an afternoon. I know for one I never went through and fixed up a vehicle before I sold it. Usually by that point I didn't care about the vehicle and all maintenance ceased. Also as mentioned a good tune up could be had for $100 inlcuding the rebuild kit. I always try to imagine what it would feel like to be an hour from home when she decides to die. An ounce of prevention......
If you're getting fuel TO the carb, it's sounding more like the carb (maybe the accelerator pump). Be sure you have spark before you spend the time money to break into the carb.
Can you see the acc pump squirting? Does it do the same if you open the throttle very slowly? Not while driving, that is. If you can open the throttle very slowly, and the motor runs up, may be carb, but if it doesn't may be ignition.
It has a full set of new plugs. Haven't done the points yet. Could it be alternator related? I just replaced the battery as well. Wonder if the Alt is going, but never though that could impact acceleration.
Sounds like you MAY have water laying in the bottom of the bowl on the carb... pull the carb off and take the top off and dump/clean, the bowl.
The symptoms you are describing are typical of water in the fuel...it will idle but when throttled up it will pull the water up into the main jets, the water won't pass through and cuts off the fuel
Also change fuel filter and run some HEAT water remover in the tank.
Not saying this is your problem because I am not there...But food for thought.
You could also just pour HEAT in the tank and try and run it out this is a very slow proccess if you have a good load of water...could take days of bad running before it clears up.
About to pull the Carb (Yes... still having the problem)
While doing so I discovered an unconnected Vacuum line pair that I cannot seem to find a location for. I am posting a photo in which you can see the lines I am talking about as well as the other side of the engine to see where all the lines are going.
Thanks guys! I really appreciate all the ideas and help!
Come along for a ride with me. I took a recorder along so that you can hear what's happening. Keep in mind.. I've been driving her around town for a month with no problem until this stopped happening. You'll hear me pull out of the driveway in second gear, head up the street and shift into third when it stalls. You'll hear me restart and back into the drive and park. Maybe it will help with the diagnosis?
