New tires

It is time to break down and get some new tires for my 1968 F-250. My current tires are 10+ year old bias tires, 9.50x16.5 front and 12.00x16.5 rear. I cannot find the 12.00's but can get a 9.50r and 33/1250 radials to fit the present 16.5 rims. I think the other option is to get some 16 in rims and go that way. But then what size tire?

What is the collective wisdom on this?

Ken
I am planning a trip from California to Colorado and back in Sep.

Ken,
I just went through the same question on my 69 F250. I wanted as tall as I could get to give me kind of a "poor man's" overdrive. I found some late 80's/early 90's 16X7 rims and put on 285/75R16 tires (about 33 inches tall). The rims clear my huge twin piston disc brake calipers and my engine doesn't "scream" so bad staying with 65-70 mph traffic as it did with 245/75R16 (about 29 1/2 inches tall). Be aware that the largest tire listed to fit 7 inch wide rims is 265/75R16 or 275/65R16, but the 285 was the very next size up and the first one that wanted a 7 1/2 or 8 inch rim, but my tire guy assured me that being that it was right on the edge of fitting it would be no problem. They look great and really fill the wheel openings quite well.
Hope this helps,
Gene

Gene,
Thanks for the reply.

I got some 16x7in rims then put 245/75R16 on front/spare and 265/75R16 for the rear. Definitely not cheap.
