thanks for the input. my engine is in good shape, but i would like to get rid of the oil residue from the open vent tube that gets all over the bottom of the engine and everything in its path when driving. also would like to lower the fumes. thanks, skips 56
The reason you have oil coming out the vent tube is due to the filter media being saturated with oil. This is due to excessive blow by which means that your engine has worn rings and or cylinder walls. If you doubt this, do a leakdown test, and also monitor your oil use. An engine in real good condition will use less than half a quart in 1000 miles, even less with synthetic oil (which does not burn). Routing the crankcase into a PCV valve will place all this oil into your intake manifold, and the intake system which would be routed to the air cleaner will put oil into your air cleaner, contaminating your air filter. In either case you will have a big mess...... You also are likely to have more oil smoke in the exhaust due to the PVC. If you change the filter on the vent tube it will absorb the oil for awhile, but the only cure is to rebuild the engine so that you don't generate the blow by in the first place.
I believe some of the last 292 y/blocks in 1964 had that system, I have one that has a different outlet from the top valley cover and The front left canister and tube have a cover plate. The rest of the parts are missing . I am trying to find out if this was factory installed as the valley cover doesn't look like it has been modifide .
Hello, SKIPS56 ; I believe : ALANCO : is right , you need to rebuild the engine to correct the blowby . For your information I checked my three engines and on the front or two of them on the lower left side they have block off plates installed . the other one must be newer as it is cast over . JIM
Skip,
Do you mean the driver's side? If so, there is a flat spot toward the front, just behind the fuel pump, behind that is where the oil pump taps in (I think) and also tapped into that is the oil pressure sender. Behind that is the oil filter. Maybe this block never had a draft tube.
Yes that's the location the two engines that I have they are caped off and one has that flat area you just discribed . If yours has just the flat area then it may have come with a pcv that somebody has removed . mayby somebody else can come on here and say if that is correct or not . But you may still need to rebuild the engine to cut back on the blowby
thanks for the help. I need to do a leak down test. The engine doesn't use oil, I just drove it in a 2400 mile trip and it used less then a quart. You mentioned that the crank case vent has a filter, my vent assembly only has a screen, am I missing a filter that goes over the screen?

If you look back to 6-27-09 on this thread and contact " numberdummy " though .private message he can give you all your answers . Or go to the " Y BLOCK " section of this forum and there is some good information there that he posted . I found it last night back a couple of pages . He can help more than I can . JIM
