Cam position sensor

im doing a project i tried to install the new cam sensor with the syncro gear i have the install tool. just need to know after i install it should the arrow on the install tool be parralel with the center line of the cam shaft?
btw my vehicle is a 97 mercury mountaineer 5.0 i will have pics soon.
any help would be great

ok any one have idies i got the hayes man and it said to aline the install tool to the center line of the cam saft ran fine but when i turnd off the truck the light came back on pulled the code and came up for the CPS again i swap them out and the light still came on after the next start up
do i need to take this to a dealer and have then time the engine now or what some input would be great.

did you make sure you were at dead top center you installed the syncronizer?? the arrow should face straight ahead,(parallel w/center line of engine).the best way to install this syncon.is to remove the #1 plug , disconnect the ignition ,crank the engine so the compression expell the #1 plug ,then check crankshaft damper and see if you are on the dtc. mark .if all this is correct everything should work fine.sometimes people install this syncon. 180 degrees out of center. good luck

yea i did all that #1 cylinder at top dead center installed syncro with alignment tool attached and facing center line of cam.

I just completed a cps and it did the same thing.I erased the code(p0340)and it came back , drove the truck about another 100 miles and cleared it self .things to look for ,loose elec. connection, did the magnet break off??good luck

yea its all good i did a 400 mile trip this weekend in it truck ran fine.light still comes on after the 2nd restart drove the 400 miles back light stayed on wit hthat same code.

ok i just replacd the sensor (just to see if the one that came with the sync was no good) and now the CEL stays off.. i even resterded the truck 10 times or so.. will let yall know tomarrow if the CEL comes back on
