carb trick

hey question for you all

i got used 4 barrel carb from an old block, want to put it on mine only have a 2-b now

but i hear they have bad fuel econ

it's vacume secondarys, what would happen if i put a solenoid valve in the vacume line to the secondarys so they only get the vacume when i open the valve with a switch inside the cab? then i have the gas econ of a 2 barrel but if i want the extra power i can just flip the switch and open up the other 2 secondary barrels

will it work?

that's how vaccume secondarys work. you cruise on the 2bbls, and when you reach a certain throttle position, and the vaccume point is reached, the 2nd 2 bbls open

yeah i know i just want to be able to lock out the secondarys so no matter what i do with the throttle i get the same fuel econ as my old carb, for long drives and such

then if i put the really light springs on the secondarys (takes little vacume to open them all the way), then when i flip the switch it opens the solenoid and opens the valve on the vacume line and then i have 4 barrel power for showing off and bombing around town.

Just leave the 2V on it and you won't have to worry about the seconadries.

Well I would but that defeats the point of having the OPTION to open them.

secondarys are adjustable, you can make them open any time you want. go through the I6 forums, there was a thread sometime back telling how to adjust the secondarys on a holley.

you can just disconnect the secondaries, it defeats the purpose of putting a 4bbl on the rig. also when you have the "switch" for the secondaries, you will have a HUGE bog with the added air and possibly a backfire... if you still want the "option" of selectable secondaries, get a double pumper holley with a pull cable like a mechanical choke. if ya do that you can run on the back barrels. just a thought.

They already come with a switch. It's called the gas pedal, and is controlled by your foot. Anything from idle up to about 1/2-3/4 throttle, they will be off. Mash it to the floor, they are still going to be off until the engine rpms rise enough to open them.

Don't worry. They are not easily opened and when they are open, you will know it. It's not like the secondaries are going to open without you knowing it and controlling it.

when i first put my edelbrock carb on my 460.i bolted the carb to the intake manifold.i was really disappointing with the performance,i was a dog no power, couldn't climb a hill with out dropping a gear.i checked my carb and found the intake was preventing my secondary's from opening.bought an adapter plate and she pulled better, than with the worn out holly that was on it.the primary's on a four barrel are a lot smaller than on a two barrel.if you put that valve on there you will choke that engine.it won't run right.like everybody here has said, your foot controls when the secondary's open.if you drive it normally the four barrel will give you better fuel economy.
