5.4L Maintenance

Hey guys, I have a 2004 F250 5.4L with 43k(not 143K) miles, and I am looking for input on what I should do besides the obvious. This truck does not pull anything, its for leisure, so it does not get worked too hard, besides having 37s under it. Basically, I would like to know what you guys do, along the way, and around what mileage. I am soon going to change the air filter, fuel filter, during oil changes I grease the ball joints and other zerks. I use a needle on my grease gun, and insert grease into the boot, I just reuse the same hole. What else can I do to keep it running great? Thanks!

just do the ford recomended maintance. If you go on there site you can just select what year your truck is and how you use it and it will tell you what you need to do and when to do it. there site is pretty useful for this kinda stuff.

If you're running 37's on factory gearing I'd be changing my trans fluid and filter often.

And paying close attention to your ball joints and hubs.

I got my 2003 in 2005 with around 29,000 miles. Other than the regular maintenance (oils and other lubes), I've done nothing to mine until recently. Well, I changed the front brakes at about 60,000 miles, only because they were squealing and annoying (they still had better than 50 percent on the pads!). I just did my first tune-up at 105,000 miles (plugs, fuel filter, pcv, clean throttle body). It still ran great before, but sure runs better now...much smoother, picked up a very modest 1/2 to 1 mpg. Other than that, I've shot about 1/2 a can of freon in it, changed the battery, and fixed one door lock.

I use a K&N filter, so I just clean it "as needed". I use Royal Purple for the oil, and change the filter every 5,000 miles or so, and the oil every 10 - 12,000 or so (it's due now as a matter of fact).

The truck has never been in the shop for anything since I've owned it (other than the stuff mentioned above). Never failed me. It's a brute of a truck for sure. Don't let anyone try to tell you the 5.4L isn't!

the 5.4 is an amazing engine! lots of diesel guys will disagree, but i tow more weight and further distances with my 5.4 than most of the diesel trucks around here do!

I agree, follow the reccommended maintance schedule and the 5.4 will produce. I am amazed at what this engine can do. I have had f-250 gassers since 1967. They have never failed me.
