T18 4 spd question

How far forward is the shifter in T18 equipped trucks? Can I get some pics?

I'm doing some measuring and mocking up to put a T18 were a C6 was and I'm concerned that the shifter is too far forward. Rough measuring and/or wrong componentry seems to have the shifter well under the dash board, almost to the welding flange.

I do believe the bell housing is a 400's (part # D7T something, something)with the diaghram clutch if that makes a huge difference. And the engine is a 460.

Please somebody help me make this work. I really want a manual tranny.

That's the correct position. It's to make room for the transfer case shift lever.

Thanks.

I searched but couldn't find out whether or not an older 460 Long style clutch bell housing is deeper then the 400's diaphram style bell housing. Are they?

I have no clue. They never were offered from the factory during this generation. I don't care for anything newer than 1979.

You know what I did before the internet?

No offense to anyone that has posted valuable knowledge on the web, but I found out for myself.

The old 429/460 bells are 6 9/16' deep and the 400 bells are 6 3/8' deep.
3/16 of an inch difference.

Cool, I'm gonna want to trade my OEM iron 400 for a Lakewood steel blowproof.

They are familial possessions.

got some part numbers. d7tai for the bell and d2a3e on the tranny tag, weird cause third digit is code for the full size cars of that era. so its a galaxie trans?

don't think so. aside from the obvious tag change answer, is this an appropriate pn?
