Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and new to Ford, after being a Chev man the last 16 years.
I have been driving my my 1993 f-150 with 302/E40D for about a month now. It's starting to shudder quite bad especially when I'm cruising between 47-49 kms/hr. I read somewhere that people have had success adding Motorcraft Friction Modifier additive to cure this. I know it's intended for rear ends but some places I've read of people adding it to the trannys to rid them of shudder? Is this safe for the E4OD's?
I changed the fluid and transmission filter in May. I drove the truck from Ontario to New Brunswick with no problems. It started shortly after that, within the last month. I'm leary of using additives too, but saw someone write how one 4 oz bottle of friction modifier cured the shudder in any Ford they had tried it on.
My brother did the fluid/filter change just before I picked up the truck at his place. You're probably right, I doubt he drained the convertor. Should I take it in where they can hook it up to a machine to flush it? Perhaps the Ford dealer?
i had mine done like that once-it's costly -i do it my self now -just pull the inspection plate and spin the converter till ya see the drain plug-lucas is one good product-have used it many times!
Now how do you drain the converter? This may sound retarded, but I am used to manual trans, not ATX. I am having minor issues with my E4OD as well, but not in shudder.
Thanks for the advice on the fluid change. The truck started shaking worse and worse until I could barely drive it. I found my two month old plug wires were coming apart at the crimps I replaced them with Motorcraft wires routed as shown in other posts on the forum. The "tranny problem" is now fixed

DO NOT use the transmission flush machine. It will just cause more problems. Mine actually ran a little funky about a month after I got it 10 years ago. It had 80k miles on it then. I gave it a complete tune up and found that the plugs were shot.
