friction modifier in E4OD?

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forums and new to Ford, after being a Chev man the last 16 years.

I have been driving my my 1993 f-150 with 302/E40D for about a month now. It's starting to shudder quite bad especially when I'm cruising between 47-49 kms/hr. I read somewhere that people have had success adding Motorcraft Friction Modifier additive to cure this. I know it's intended for rear ends but some places I've read of people adding it to the trannys to rid them of shudder? Is this safe for the E4OD's?

Thanks for any help, great forum guys,

Brad

Have you checked the trans fluid for its level and condition? That would be the first thing I'd look for.

Personally, I wouldn't put in friction modifier...you do NOT want to rebuild a E40D if you can help it!

I changed the fluid and transmission filter in May. I drove the truck from Ontario to New Brunswick with no problems. It started shortly after that, within the last month. I'm leary of using additives too, but saw someone write how one 4 oz bottle of friction modifier cured the shudder in any Ford they had tried it on.

I have used it in the 4R70W and read where others have too but I have not heard of anyone doing it with a E4OD.

Note that if you put in Mercon V ATF it already has it in it.

did you drain the convertor?

i bet you did not.

that is where 60-70% of the fluid that is bad was.

1. drain convertor

2. drain pan and replace filter/pan

3. new name brand fluid.

optional: bottle of lucas trans fluid

or optional: dr. trans shudder fixx (google it)

then your shudder will be gone for good.

My brother did the fluid/filter change just before I picked up the truck at his place. You're probably right, I doubt he drained the convertor. Should I take it in where they can hook it up to a machine to flush it? Perhaps the Ford dealer?

leave the inspection plate on.

you drain an e4od from the plug at the bottom of the case below the convertor.

do what i said in my last post.

no power flush is needed.

especially at the ford dealer.

get a big pan, these trans hold a lot of fluid.

Now how do you drain the converter? This may sound retarded, but I am used to manual trans, not ATX. I am having minor issues with my E4OD as well, but not in shudder.

There's a drain plug in the converter. You may have to 'bump' the engine in order to get to the drain plug.

like i said, remove rubber plug, then you bump engine until drain lines up.

if you need more info then in this thread, do an advanced search.

Thanks for the advice on the fluid change. The truck started shaking worse and worse until I could barely drive it. I found my two month old plug wires were coming apart at the crimps I replaced them with Motorcraft wires routed as shown in other posts on the forum. The "tranny problem" is now fixed

DO NOT use the transmission flush machine. It will just cause more problems. Mine actually ran a little funky about a month after I got it 10 years ago. It had 80k miles on it then. I gave it a complete tune up and found that the plugs were shot.

first thing to do when getting a new vehicle is to go over it and fix what needs to be fixed.

glad the wires helped.

i hope you did a complete tuneup and still plan to do the fluid/filter in the trans.
