I work for a company who turns over there vehicles after they reach high milage 175,000 to be exact! We'll there is this 2004 F-150 (new body style) it has 175,000 miles on it, mostly highway, it doesn't burn any oil, its been fleet maintained and the body and such is in real good shape.
How long do these motors last on avg.? is there a good chance she'll start burning the oil? Also should i be conscerned about towing the snomobiles and boat around with it a lot?... I just need to know what these trucks/motors are known for at these high milages.
p.s. - my company doesn't take the time to trade or auction these vehicles, so i'm paying $1,500 !!! just for that price its worth it for sure, i could turn around and sell it for $$$ but i want to run it, i just want to know what to expect, and can i drive it like i stole it...
First of all, welcome to the site. Hope to hear more from you. I can't say how long these engines will last, mine only has 16K on it but there are guys from Canada that have over 20000 KM that have posted on here. But for $1500 you can't go wrong. If you get a year or so out of it and something happens, it doesn't owe you anything. Even if you had to put in a new engine or rebuild yours and a new transmission you still have an inexpensive rig. Hey thank you for the warm welcome, i do enjoy being part of a site where everyone is real helpful and we all have a common intrest! To answer pb34's question it is a 4.6, and your right regardless its a great deal. Oldguy i thought about that a lot. If i were to run this truck into the ground, putting a new crate motor, and maybe a tranny, would still be cost effective and i should still be able to get that money back if i were to turn it around.... I've owned a 98 4.2 in the past and really loved it, since then ive had a dodge ram 1500 (98) and i am currently driving a 94 nissan Pickup (4x4 5speed V6) its a great little truck but it now needs some frame repair. These Nissans are known for the frames going on them, idk why they have tubular frames. But eventually the Nissan will be my "mudd truck" and ill have a 2004 Ford F-150 as a daily driver, looking forward to it, and i'll probably be asking for some help or insight in the future.
properly maintained, and driven nicely, these motors can go a very long time.
it's kinda hard to determine if/when they'll burn oil. I personally have seen it happen at 50,000 miles (old 5.0 motor), or go 127,000 miles (4.9) without an issue.
about 1 qt of oil per 5,000 miles is actually considered "normal" and no cause for worry.
but hell, for $1,500...I would jump on it. New longblock & tranny would be under $5,000...and you'd still have about $2-3,000 of "equity" even after those replacements.
