axle quotes
How about a 10.25 out of a 86 350 single wheel 4.56 ratio detroit
locker everything new in the rear never used . Gears, bearings,
drums, wheel cyl., brakes, $1500 obo
PS located in eastern PA
(i live in NC)
do yall think that that axle is worth the $1500, a lot of ppl i have talked to said they wouldnt even pay $1000 for a rear axle no matter what. they told me to try to lower the price to about $900.
brand new ring and pinion gears set = $200.00 overhaul kit = $150.00 detroit locker = $500.00 (if you were to rebuild a rear end but couldnt do it yourself) labour = $500.00 (at least). disk brake conversion is probably $500.00 plus labour.
the axles arent very expensive but in this case it is rebuilt with a detroit locker...
my suggestion would be to get a quote on a used sterling 10.25 and then see what the costs would be to rebuild it to the point that you want it... maybe you could get one from an autowreckers in good shape with the gears you want (but not rebuilt) for $250.00 ..then decide that you dont need a detroit locker just yet...
i know it would be cheaper for me to buy a used 10.25 from a wrecker with say 4.56 gears (given that it is in as good of condition as my current 10.25) than it would be for me to buy 4.56 gears, seal, overhaul kit, etc... plus i'd want to get someone to do the work for me...
there is a big bonus in buying something that is like brand new... if it has the gears you want and the brakes are as you like, you dont need a genius to install it for you... you can do it yourself... if you have to rebuild a dif, you may want someone with more experience in rebuilding rear ends, thefore it will probably end up costing you the same amount that this rebuilt 10.25 will cost you.
good luck to you and please, keep us posted
