can any one tell me what type of gears a 91 ford f-150 came with? i bought my truck with out a front drive line., now i found one but the person that had it before me put different gears in the rear end.please help.thanks
There are 2 easy ways to find out which gears you have. One is get the truck off the ground and see how many rotations it takes for the driveshaft to turn in order for the tires to make one complete revolution. For example if you have to turn the driveshaft about 3 and a half times to make the tire rotate once then you probably have 3.55s. Or you could look at the axle code on the label in the cab and post what it is and someone could probably tell you what gears you have. I think 2.73, 3.08, 3.55 were all available, probably 4.10 too, I don't know for sure. Anybody else know?

Crawl under the truck and find a little metal tag attached to one of the bolts on the diff. Give us the numbers on it and several of us have the knowledge to tell you everything you want to know about you diff based off those numbers.
Hold on, I just re-read your post, you mentioned that the previous owner had put in different gears, so the tag may not be correct. In this case, depending on the trouble you're willing to go through, you can turn the drive shaft and tires as suggested earlier, or you can remove the diff cover and count gears, just divide the ring gears by the gears on the input shaft. This way you'll: (A) Know for absolute certain what gears you have, (B) Check up on the condition of those gears, and (C) get a chance to change your fluid.
As to the front driveline, are you refering to your front gears that need to be replaced? If so, keep in mind that Ford often puts in a very slightly higher gear up front. For example, my Sterling 10.25" in the rear is 4.10:1, but my Dana 50 up front is 4.09:1, and my buddy's Ranger's Ford 7.5" in the rear is 3.73:1 but his Dana 28 up front is 3.72:1. Why this is, I don't know.
Good Luck.
