Picked up my truck yesterday from Ford. Regeared from 3.73 to 4.30 and overall am very HAPPY. While it is not "night and day", I definitely can feel some more "torque" on my drive wheels and am especially exzcited to hook up the big trailer in about a month.
I currently am running a 6" lift with 37" mud tires and although the 6.4 is plenty strong, I felt as if the drivetrain was "struggl;ing" just a bit to move a my truck.
Overall I paid more than I probably should have for both axles (4wd) to be done, but am 100% satisfied that Ford did it and will warranty it.
My ONLY concern that I have had for about 3 months before and after the gear swap is an intermittent cluncking in the drivetrain that the Ford Tech says is a miscommunication with the TCM and PCM. Anybody heard of this or experienced this? He said next time it happens and throws a code he will replace my TCM.
I would think your transmission will be happier with the change. I think your final drive is still lower than the 3.73 with the stock tires, but I haven't done the math to confirm. TCM/PCM sounds like the kind of thing I would have told someone to buy time to figure out the problem or suggest a programmer.
The PCM should do all power train, I would have said ECM (engine) and TCM (transmission). It's likely that the PCM needs to know the gear ratio and tire size to adjust the shifting, I remember this being a big issue with some other PCMs, not so sure about EEC-V or the computer based I've heard ford wanted to use.
The INTERMITTENT "cluncking" almost to the point that it wants to either stop the truck or sounds "like" it may shut off happened for example one day last week while I was on the interstate riding bout 60 mph. WHAT could it be???
Cost to regear from 3.73 to 4.30 was almost $3,000 which is a little steep and I will probably get flamed for it, BUT I am 100% confident in quality of parts, workmanship and warranty since Ford did it.
*Excited to hook trailer up in next few weeks and pull with new gears.
ps...........We are having a little baby girl TOMORROW!! Happy Father's Day on Sunday to me!!
i'd take it to the dealer and maybe have them do a ride along. you can make your own smoked taillights. get some VHT Night Shades taillight paint. Not sure how much the 08 HD headlights are, i have HD's in my 06 if you havent seen my gallery.

Classic example of a bad TCM. Mine had one at 600 miles. Started with a hard shift from 2nd to 3rd, felt like someone hit me from behind. Didn't do it 100% of the time but just about everyday.
Took it in, they reflashed the pcm..did not fix it. Finally was bad enough it threw the truck in limp mode.
Dealer didn't have one in stock for the 08's so he put an older one on and it worked, but eventually since it was not right it did what you are describing so we had to get the correct one on it.
