Posted this aleady but no one bit.My "new to me" '97 F-150 Lariat 4x4 has a growl or vibration when accelerating but is more pronounced when slowing down. I think it's coming from the back but not 100% sure. There is no detectable vibration when cruising down the road at any speed. Going to start with u-joints but any I've ever had problems with make a "clicking" sound as opposed to a growl or humming. It sounds like it's related to driveshaft speed but again, I'm not 100% sure. Anyone had similar problems? It's the last "bug" to iron out on the new ride so I'd appreciate any ideas.

Sounds like a rear end problem to me. I would pull the cover off of it and replace the differential fluid. Inspect things while there for signs of trouble. Good luck!
I'm thinking you are right, but I'm going to swap out the u-joints anyway, just in case I get lucky. They appear to be the factory originals. If it is the rear end, it will be a good excuse to put a limited slip dif in there as it's an open carrier right now.
Never had a vehicle with a locker. How does it affect driveability in the snow? Being in Ontario and in an area where we get lots, the ability to get my guy to hockey on a winter weekend day is very important,in fact, that's one of the reasons for buying the truck. We will also be using it for the odd camping trip, hauling the dirt bikes around, and pulling the fishing boat up north.
