Upon taking my rear diff apart for a rebuild, it was noticed that the differential housing was cracked. Forgive my terminology as it may be incorrect, I'll describe: Where the bearings for the pinion sit in the 3rd member there is a crack. The axle housing is fine. My question is this: My rear end is a limited slip, can I use a differential housing from a non-limited slip rear end as a replacement or does it have to be a limited slip housing. I can find all kinds of used assy's but none are limited slip. All of my gears etc. appear to be undamaged but I don't have it completely apart yet. I will be putting new or reman replacement parts if they're required but I would like to know about the housing part first.
Thanks in advance,
Don W.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Feb-02 AT 10:55 PM (EST)]Alot depends on the extent of the crack. If it is big, growing, or leaking oil - the case definately needs replacement. If it not growing nor leaking or just a visual casting defect, it may be OK for use at low HP levels. Remember, the parting line of a casting can be mistaken for a crack.
Should the case need replacement - the limited slip diff and your gearset can be put into any 9" case that uses the same bearings. There's big bearing and small bearing cases. There's also single web, double web, and "N" cases. I would take your old one apart and identify the pinion and carrier bearing cups (outer "races"). Then get another case and confirm it uses the same bearings. If the bearing numbers match, use the case! Just be sure you have the pinion depth, gearset backlash, and bearing preloads adjusted within spec when it's all back together.
From what I have seen, the 67-72 F100's with 9" rearends all use the same single web case and 28 spline axles.
