misfire?

hey fellow ford boys i got a 2002 expy 5.4L , i have 115,000 miles on it. about 2 months ago the #8 cylinder coil ( COP ) went bad so i changed it and the rest of the plugs and plug boots. that fixed my CEL and it ran great for 2 months, but now it is missin while driving ,b ut it only happens when you are running in gear.. At idle it runs okay the idle seems to run a bit high. but it will not seem to throw a CEL i am kinda stumped. maybe Another COP is going out or simply a fuel filter? it is our family truck and we are not in a posistion to pay a shop for something i can do. besides we have 6 kids and i am scared it will die if i keep driving it it is getting so bad that it does it almost all of the time, it used to only do it sometimes. it is not blowing any smoke at all the oil is clean (no Water or fuel in it) all seems to be good it it pointing to an electrical or fuel issue. but no CEL and trust me with the way it is running it should have thrown it along time ago. have any of you ever had a issue like this?

any help will be much appreciated . also how do i check the coil ohms and what should it read?
I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

Have you double checked all of the boots and wires to make sure the connection is good?

Maybe bring it to autozone and have them try to read it just for the hell of it. Maybe something will show.

Sorry I can't be more help, I know it sucks when your car isn't running right.

If you can't figure it out, maybe bring it to a shop, pay the $75 for a hour so they can diagnos the problem. Don't tell them of course, just say it's having issues and you want to be notified before they start the work. WHen they do, tell them no, pick it up, along with a print out of what they say it needs, bring it back and post it here.

Oh, just noticed the fuel filter part. CHANGE IT lol. Cheap, easy, and should be done anyway.

I change mine once a year. Added insurance, in my opinion. With the cruddy gas out there, who knows what is being passed through the filters now-a-days.

Also, when was the last time you had your trans flushed and refilled with new fluid? May possibly be the trans is slipping but it feels like an engine miss. I had a similar thing with my Expy a few years back - thought it was a COP going, but had the trans flushed and problem went away.

Many times a bad coil will not give you a CEL. Note that when a coil is getting weak, it will worsen as you acclerate and place more of a load on it to fire.

Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have
been designed with both durability and performance in mind.
Please see them at:

http://www.performancedistributors.com/soscoils.htm

Quality was the main feature we stressed when we went to the
drawing board on these coils.

By the way, for those of you who only need to replace a defective coil,
our SOS Coils are available separately.

Check the fuel injectors also. A cracked one will cause a misfire. It's easy to check them while you are working on the plugs & coils anyway, since they really are in the way

The coils should read about 0.55ohms across the two terminals, and about 5,500Ohms from the terminal through to the end.

Interestingly enough, my factory coils all read .65ohms across and 6,500ohms through. Think I might need to calibrate my VOM
