thanks gp's p&j pretty cool you got your gramps old truck to restore I would hang on to till the day I died. I'm know my grandpa had several of these ole truck but I never seen them.
I'm 17 now; when I was 15 my dad bought me my truck. it was the first Ford we've had in a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGG time. it has the 300 in it, but with the 3 on the column. it hasn't failed on me yet. if you take care of it it will do you great.
I have a Flowmaster 10 series and just when you let out of the clutch and start going through the gear it really sounds like a small Cummins. I love it.
last week I got my radiator rebuilt so I wasn't able drive it for about 4 days. on the first day that I got it back I was waiting at the railroad crossing. when the arms went up I stalled it.......I felt so bad. I forgot how much torque that thing has.
You can find floorpans for $40 each on LMC Truck. If you can weld then great but if not some panel adhesive should work just as well, that's what I'm planning to do with mine.
You're probably already looking but keep an eye out for rotted rubber hoses, some of those lines could be as old as the truck. Fuel lines, rad hoses, vacuum lines, brake lines, they're cheap to replace but not so cheap if they go at the wrong time
yeah I plan on doing them first I'm planning on welding them in I have access to plasma cutter and a mig so I 'm gonna give it a shot
10-4 on the hose/lines I plan on going over all that stuff as well. the truck starts great and runs well, but I'm gonna change the plugs, wires, and cap & button as well as replace the vacuum hoses

Good stuff. The first time I drove my truck home I discovered coolant shooting out of a rusted rad seam and gas gushing out of a rotted line. Not to mention the lower rad hose was ready to disintegrate and under a layer of dirt the battery turned out to be Chrysler OEM But it was fun to fix all that, you'll enjoy this truck. Being able to crawl under it without a jack is a big plus.
Welcome to FTE smoke20, as the others have said, the 300 is a great, torqy, reliable engine that will treat you well as long as you change the oil once in a while!! Ive also read that if you want a cheap upgrade, that you can go to a junkyard nearby to get the exhaust manifold off a late model 300 which flows much better. You'll have to ask 6cylBill about it, i thought it was one of his posts that i read that in.
I too just joined with my first ford truck not too long ago, these guys know how to treat a fellow gearhead!

AbandondedBronco is the guy to talk to about that, he has a Carb'd 300 with EFI manifolds. He can tell you the correct way to do all that. I've always worked from the manifolds on back.
Welcome to FTE and Ford trucks, JSTMoto! What truck do you have?
oops, my bad 6CylBill!!! I've read alot of your posts on the 300 I6, but now that you mention it, AbandondedBronco's name does sound familiar. Ironically enough, i dont have a 300 I6 in my truck. I've got a 76 Highboy with either a 360 or 390 FE (not original engine). Im too afraid to measure the stroke, i mean what if it turns out to be a 360!!!!
I like to read as much as i can about different engines, so i'll consistently be poking around here and there learning what i can, and posting when i can, this forum's already been a great help!
sry for the double post, it took a long time for my post to submit, but i didn't hit it twice... is this the "server downtime" stuff i'm seeing at the top of the board??

Ha Ha! I think i'll be alright with my 360/390, but thanks for the offer! I have 3 pics up in my gallery, but here's a -LINK- to my first post with pics!

Hey Moto, I just looked at your truck. Man that thing is suh-weet, I would be proud to have that baby! is it pretty loud? I noticed the flowmasters. I was just going to say, does it like to rev??? If it does, it might be a 360, since 360's are supposed to have a shorter stroke.
Sweet truck though, I wish I would have found it first!
About the rev thing... well it's got a 3000 rpm rev limit chip in the MSD ignition box, so it cuts out right in the middle of the powerband!!! That is next on the list! I wish MSD didnt charge $35 for 5 rev chips when all i need is one. I was thinking of going with a 4500 rpm chip with the stock bottom end and heads. I found a site that sells the chips individually but each one is $8 shipped.
It still needs a ton of work though, a new paint job and new interior are on the list as well.
It isn't too loud, but it still bugs the neighbors! I'll have to get a video of it up sometime (especially since you're well versed in the exhaust scene!), it doesn't sound like all the other dual exhaust trucks i hear on the roads, i like it!
