Oil Changes?

I've never owned a diesel truck before and it's coming up to 3k miles since I first bought my F250, which is when I normally change the oil in my gas engine vehicles.

Are the oil change intervals the same for diesel as for gas engines or can I wait longer, and can I just take it to a quick oil change shop (I'm aware of the concerns about that, but take my cars there anyway because I don't want to do it myself) or to a diesel truck shop instead?

Please advise. Thanks!

I change mine every 5,000 miles. Just make sure they use a diesel rated oil and don't follow over when they tell you the cost.

I do mine every 5k because it makes it easy for me to remember when to change it.
Some here run synthetics and run longer intervals.

Since you are aware of the concerns, yet take your vehicles anyways, why even bother to ask if you can take it to a quick lube place?

My oil gets changed about 4000. Give or take a few.

Welcome to FTE.

You can change at 3k if you want to, I do when I run dino. When I run synthetic I let it go a little longer then that.

I just asked in case there were some "specialized" skills required to change the oil in diesels that a "quick change" place would not be qualified to do. Apparently, that's not an issue, except to make sure they know to use "diesel rated oil."

I'll ask the shop where I normally take my cars if they have "diesel rated oil" and if they hesitate or look at me cross-eyed, I'll have my answer to whether to let them change the oil in my truck or not!.

BTW, thanks to everyone for the quick replies.

The amount of oil in the 7.3 will hold out longer then 3k. % k is safe, pull an oil anaylsis and see if your style of driving will allow you to go to 7500 or 10k miles. other option is to go to synthetic oil and that allows for longer oil change intervals which can also be determined through oil analsis.

The thing to make sure of at a quick-change place besides having them use diesel-rated oils is that they use ENOUGH oil.... 16 quarts!!... not 5 or 6.

Personally, I run a bypass oil filtration sytem with synthetic oil and am getting 15K-16K between changes, and typically have to top off at 8K with about 1.5 quarts.

I work my trucks 2000 250psd 4x4 ccab 8' bed 30' gooseneck ,I changed oil between 8000 and 10,000 mi and fuel filter every other oil chg. I got my own oil bulk put it in 1 gal or 2 1/2 gal jugs would only put 15 qts in jugs alot of the guys cant measure, took to local walmart . used my oil and my filter . it is the cheapest way to go .and you doont have to get rid of the used oil. the shell rotel ran close to $8 a gal last i bought and walmart usually carries the ford filter about $20 ,, had 460,000mi on the 2000 and 305000+ on my 350 .. the big rigs will normally run 25,000 mi between oil changes but hold 10 gal or better,a lot of trucking cos run the old oil thruugh a filter bank right back into the fuel tank and burn it.

Better if you ask them what oil they recommend for your diesel truck. That way that don't just say, yea, the stuff we use out of the hose is diesel rated. Many oils work well in our trucks, but some do not. We'll be happy to tell you if their choice is acceptable.

5-6000 miles between changes, Rotella T dino 15w-40 NAPA( Hastings ) oil filters since I bought it with 39,000 miles it now has over 142,000, engine is very clean inside, no oil related problems to date.

The thing i've noticed about quick lube shops is you get a good price if you use the bulk oil that they offer, the minute you specify the precise type of oil, amount and filter the price goes through the roof. Heck you might as well make an appointment with the Ford Dealer because you wont be saving any time nor money to have it done right. Just remeber the old addage you can't change your oil too often and you'll be fine.

For me, I let the dealer change my oil twice when I first got it, they were free but as soon as they pulled it out I checked to make sure everything was right. After that, I changed with one more 15-40 dino change then went with Rotella 5-40 synthetic. Been running synthetics since, got 120,000 on the clock now and all is well. If you didn't want to change your own oil I would take my to a major truck stop garage, they have the right oil there.. and they know what their doing..

That's a good point about the dealer. Seems like many of the dealers are now offering some decent prices (compared to lube shops) on oil changes since they're trying to build their customer base. Might be worth looking into.

F250 you go 15-16K between....Wow. How does a bypass oil filtration system help? I know using synthetic you can go longer, but 15-16K......I thought I was pushing it going 6K. I was thinking of using synthetic on my next change a feeling better about it. Now I know I will feel better.
