So I was backing out of the driveway today when I lost brake pressure in all but the last 1/2" of pedal travel. So I pulled the truck back in, pumped up the brakes, looked for leaks, let it sit for a few hours, pumped again, looked for leaks. The only leak I could find was a small one in the master cylinder lid gasket. I noticed that the MC was low on fluid (1cm in the front, 1mm in the rear), so I added brake fluid, put the lid back on, pumped the brakes till I got pressure. Then I drove up and down the driveway a few times and the brakes seemed to work fine. My question is, is the truck safe to drive as long as I keep an eye on the fluid level until I get a new MC lid gasket? Or could there be some other problem that I'm not seeing here?
Also should I buy just the master cylinder gasket or the whole gasket / cover / hold down kit? And what's the best place to get these parts in terms of availability and fit? Ford dealer? LMC? parts store?
Salty, Look carefully at the inside of each wheel for wetness. The system shouldn't lose any fluid at all.
I keep an eye out for a blown truck tire along the roadway and keep a section of inner tube around for times like this. I have used it to make a double gasket for an ill fitting master cylinder.
Make darn sure you keep check on the level, you do not want a aw sheet or Kodak moment.
