Tape or not

Got into an argument w a guy about taping things off.. I say take the thing off unless it is a real mother F@%^er. Like a glued in window or something. He says no. tape off everything unless it is falling off.. My argument is that 1 it is a nicer job when things are removed and half the time is is faster to remove than it is to tape.(cab light,2 screws) or the felt window molding.

What do you guys think?

I have done and do both. It depends on a few criteria. If you are building a show car, street rod, hot rod or restoration, definatly remove as much as you can, then paint. But for collision work, unless there is work in the area, you are usually taping stuff off. Insurance companies will not pay to remove something, then reinstall it if it isnt on a part being replaced or having some major body work being done (emblems and some mouldings are the exception). An example might be the moulding around quarter glass. Unless you have to remove the interior to get to the nuts holding that piece on, it gets taped off. Same will go for door mirrors on newer Ford trucks (like a 04 F150, you have to remove the door panel to get to the nuts)
If it is easy (like cab roof lights) then by all means I will remove it. On items like that it is quicker and easier to remove them than it is to tape them.
I have taped off many items, and if done with proper tape and patience, it is very hard to tell that it has been taped off.

Anyone can tape a part properly ,, the main criteria for me is ,how well I'll be able to prep the area to prevent the paint from peeling ... Most insurance companies I deal with ,expect us to issue a lifetime warranty on the repairs
