Rear axle leak

I have a 04 super cab FX4 with 46k on it. Yesterday I was out driving around in the boonies and noticed on my right rear tire some oil leaking out, looks like it is coming out from right behind the brake disc. I am thinking it is the oil seal but not sure. Wanted to see if you guys had any ideas or had this happen to you.

Thanks in advance for anything!!

Yep, its the axelshaft seal. Get it changed asap! Mine failed at 60,000 while i was on my way to florida. They ended up having to change the axelshaft out also because the old seal cut a groove in it. Luckily i was under warranty because it would have cost over $600!

I asked about this 2 weeks ago and somebody was nice enough to post a link to an older thread that had all the pictures and step by step instructions on how to replace the $6 seal that leaks in there. a great read. you can either scroll back 10-15 days or so and look for a thread that I started or so a search and it should come up. I have not mastered the search functions or how to enbed links. I'll go look though...

Yep get it in ASAP. My '04 FX4 had the same problem at 40K. Both sides actually went at the same time and they had to replace the axle shafts as well. Thank god for extended warranties.

pull the tire off and check the brakes

it may also be a leaky brake line or a ruptured caliper piston.

either way, get it fixed ASAP like the guys above mentioned

Mine just went out on the drivers side rear seal. Leaked a load of oil. Got both sides replaced for 300 bucks.

Well I changed out both seals and bearings today and so far they are good. The axle shafts actually looked really good The process went a lot easier than I thought it would. Just wanted to give you guys the update.
