Can you guys clarify something for me? I have a 351m that needs to be rebuilt sometime down the road. I plan on turning it into a 400. I have a scrap 400 that I plan on using the crank from when the time comes. Is the stroke of the crank the only differences in the two motors? I assume that the rods and pistons are the same. I need to tear down the 400 to get rid if what I don't need. I was planning on just hanging onto the crank, heads and maybe connecting rods. The 351m is a 4x4 truck motor and the 400 is out of a 2 wheel drive, thats why I want to keep the 351m block. Thanks for any clarification.
What makes the original 400 scrap? Is it broken, cracked, has a hole in it?
Why not take the 400 engine apart and re-build that? You want a 400, and you have one, so build it and then swap it in. This will minimize the down time the truck has to deal with while the engine is being built.
This could be just a weekend deal, and not much longer than that.
Actually the 351m is already on the stand, and I believe has some bent push rods, both engines are extras that I have, the rebuild is suppose to be for my sons 79 F250 4x4 when restore time comes. the 400 that I call scrap, is full of gunk and I think that the casting # is an older block that is supose to have thin water jacket walls ( or so I have been told). Also the dip stick is on the left unlike the 4x4 351m, I know it is supose to be no big deal, but I would also have to change the sump position to make it like the 4x4 should be. I have never had the 400 running, I thought that I was going to have to use it once, but didn't have to. Maybe it would be worth looking in to, I just have to much stuff and didn't want to pitch anything that I might need.
Keep it all until your done building the motor in case you have a cracked head, find out the 351m is bored .060 or have a bad rod(s). The little thinks kill too, like bolts and brackets.
