First THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!!!


I have an '03 F-350 Super Duty with the 6.0L. Tonight while driving home I noticed that the battery light on the instrument panel kept going off and on, sometimes just very faintly (dim) and others it would come on and stay on then go off only to continue to "flicker" off and on...

I got home and checked the voltage on the batteries, with the truck NOT running both batteries were sitting at 12.31V, when I checked it with the truck running voltage dropped on both batteries to 12.11V. Seems that they are not getting a charge from the alt. or a very weak one at best, I will have that checked tomarrow.

My question is this, I have been doing a little reading on this truck and some models are supposedly equiped with dual alternators (a top, and bottom). This being my first diesel and not having a clue about the dual battery system this stumped me! I have searched and can not find a second alternator on this engine. I obviously located the one on the top left side (looking from front of truck) of the engine but unless the other is really tucked in someplace I don't think it has another. Where would it be located?????

PLEASE HELP, I need to have this truck back up by Sunday so I can get to work, I have over a 100 mile commute and need to know it's right... Thanks everyone for ANY input!!!

 

I believe the dual alt. setup is an order option for snowplow users, ambulance and fire trucks etc. if you have the option it would be very easy to spot. access is from underneath the truck on our ambulances, sure it would be the same on other rigs. hope this helps.

 

The alternators are pretty much stacked on top of each other. You most likely don't have a dual alternator setup. Also i think there is a sticker on top of the radiator shroud that shows the serpantine belt path that would show the 2nd alt. (not 100% sure of this)
