lifted 79 4x4

OK my 1979 f150 has the 460 big block. The guy who had it before me was useing it for a play toy.

I think is has been lifted alrdy. it has 31x10.50s on it right now and from just eyeing it there is about 3-4ins between top of the tire to bottem of tire well.

I was needing to know what kind of body lift i can use and what will it hurt in the long run.

it is not lifted high enuff for me right now.

Are you actually asking about a body lift or a suspension lift? The body lift is not affected by the engine or trans combo, and really other than weight, neither is the suspension lift. In stock form the 460 weighs about 120 lbs more than the 400 and this can be put on a diet by installing an aluminum intake.
A regular old suspension lift for you desired heigth would be just fine.
How much do you plan on lifting? How much tire are you going to want to run?

Are you sure it's been lifted? 3-4" of fender clearance with 31's seems to be pretty close to factory ride height, i'd recommend a suspension lift over a body lift, yes it will cost a little more and IMO it's less of a PITA to install, plus you'll benefit from increased ground clearance and an improvement in articulation, two things a body lift won't give you.

i also have a 79 f150 4x4. although i have put a 4 inch suspension lift and a three inch body lift on the truck. i am running 36x12.50 and i believe i could fit 37 or 38's on it. in order to put a body lift on you need to buy a drop pitman arm which will increase steering and decrease un normal tire wear.

You sure about this? The pitman arm is attached to the steering box, and this connects the drag link to the pass side knuckle (assuming that you have inverted "Y"style steering and not inverted "T".
Since the steering box is attached to the frame and the body is the only thing being lifted, the pitman arm would not be affected.
Pitman arms have to be changed after suspension lifts are installed, since the axle moves further away from the steering box, and the drop pitman arm brings back stock or close to stock geometry.
Might want to add that if a dropped pitman arm is used, then the trac bar must also be relocated, because the trac bar and the drag link should work on the same angle, or the result will be some bumpsteer.

i dont think that's a 4" lift thats already on it. it looks more like 2.5", or maybe just a levelling kit, b/c that's what mine looked like w/31's and air bags in the front coils (lifted it 2.5")

I agree with justforkicks. it doesn't look quite like a 4 inch lift.
