I noted a slight slippage during a hard climb over a mountain pass. At the next stop, the trans shifted very hard, especially the 1-2 shift at all throttle settings. Checked the fluid, level normal, red and not burnt. Checked computer codes, lockup clutch slippage. Talked to a transmission shop that I trust. He tells me that when that clutch slips, the computer raises the hydraulic pressure to compensate for the slippage, causing hard shifts.
Question, should I just replace the converter, which contains the clutch for $800, or rebuild the whole transmission for $1800. Do these prices, including installation, seem fair?
I had my front pump and the torque converter go out and decided to replace both (I paid $350 for both but pulled the tranny myself) but not rebuild the tranny. That was one year ago and my 2nd gear just started slipping(clutches are bad) with 70,000 miles on it. I know that this doesn't exactly apply to your situation but it is something to think about. If it was me I would have it rebuilt now and not worry about it. If you do go with the rebuild I recommend visiting this web site http://www.baumannengineering.com/e4odinf.htm before you do, they list E40d info and upgrades. Good Luck
$1800 is not a bad price to rebuild an E4OD, assuming good quality parts including a torque converter. I paid about $2,500 to have mine rebuilt "Bullet Proof" for towing purposes with all the "best" parts.
Once the clutch starts slipping it is probably time to do a rebuild anyway. With 116K miles you are about average due for a rebuild. If the TC starts to go, it may deposit junk in the ATF which may cause other problems, so time to do at least a routine rebuild.
Just got it back from the transmission shop. It was rebuilt with all of the updates. The price was $1800 including parts, labor, sales tax and a plate-type oil cooler. He told me typical life span is 75k to 175k on these and recommends 12k oil changes.
12K oil changes are a bit much(usual recommended is maybe 50K), but if you tow 12K is about right. Doesn't hurt to change every 12K tho, probably good for it.
