Manual Hub Service

How often should I service my manual front locking hubs? I use four wheel drive a lot in the winter, but rarely go in water over the hubs. I know there was a good thread on how to do the work, but I can't find it. Thanks, John

NOTE: Any time the hub lock is removed, a new O-ring seal must be installed. Install a new O-ring.

CAUTION: The service replacement kit includes two O-ring seals. One for testing the hub lock assembly and one for reassembly into the wheel hub.

DO NOT REUSE O-RING SEALS. Install a new gasket and O-ring.
Rotate the hub lock dial to clockwise position (LOCK). Apply lubricant to the inner and outer splines.

Insert the hub lock into the wheel hub while slowly turning the wheel hub to align the splines. Lift/jiggle the axle U-joint while pushing the hub lock into the wheel hub.

There was reference to vacuum checks which I don't think applies to manual hubs. Just confused me. LOL I haven't looked at mine as yet so don't take this as an exact procedure. But the many hubs I've serviced on different vehicles of my own it's close. Also the test o-ring reference pobably doesn't apply.

Whoa!! That was weird. This site is doing some strange things of late. Probably has something to do with the fumble-fingered user too!

besides from what was posted you really cant do much to them. i just did ball joints and all i did was apply grease on the splines and the spacers. i do need to do the vacuum check because when i put them in auto it'll stay locked for a sec then come out, even after replacing both of those "ford only" vacuum seals that cost a small fortune.
