I mentioned on here awhile back how I killed my GP's (I guess I glowed them too long with the pushbutton or something).
So I ordered some new ZD-9's and worked on it a bit last night, just did the driver's side plugs. I noticed the GP all the way in the back had some kind of rigged up connector on it. I had been under the impression this truck had all the original glow plugs, but when I saw that I just knew it wasn't a motorcraft GP. Pulled it, and sure enough, it was a Champion.
Kinda wondering if that one is one of the culprits that might have been causing my GP controller to not cycle long enough or something....not sure.
Yes, The controller works off resistance, failed GP's, wiring harness, etc... will cause it to not time/cycle properly.
Another case of manual over burn costing dollars!
You are probably very lucky that Champion is failed, Else you might have been pulling a head to get it out, Champion happens to be the worst... IMNSHO!
Well it hadn't been starting very well, that was why I "glowed" it too long....guess now that I had lost a couple other plugs and that's WHY it wasn't starting very well, but I don't know.
That is about the same as mine Dave. I have not yet tried to start it after sitting more than a couple hours without the plugs. Would the stock controller make them glow longer than a five count?
Yes it would.
First start of the day would cycle them for close to 8 or 10 seconds.
Mine will fire without glow plugs if I crank on it for a bit, but starters cost to much.
5 seconds of glow, bump the starter and the engine is running is much easier on the starter.
Back before I lower the compression ratio on a summer day with temps in the 80's, I never used the glow plugs after the first start of the day unless the truck had been sitting all day.
Now I use them after sitting for 3 hours or more.
On hot days I'm down to 10 seconds for the first glow, she lights off almost instantly. Fur subsequent starts I have 0 seconds glow time (my controller is wired in with the high-idle and cold advance temp sensor, above 112F it don't trigger the plugs) and she still fires up instantly.
Thanks Dave, that is what i thought. I also don't have to hit the plugs unless it has been sitting awhile ( like all day at work) this time of year. I figure the manual way will help with overall costs in the end by making the plugs last longer.
