O2 sensors

Hey guys, I was just wondering, what exactly will happen of not happen correctly if a 1993 5.8L is run without an O2 sensor connected at all?
I'm near the end of a swap project, this engine into a 75 250. I will probably end up welding a new bung into the exhaust and install the O2 sensor. But I was just curious what the issues were on this. Thanks!

The motor will run rich, fuel consumption and engine wear will be higher than normal. EFI needs that sensor to operate correctly.

Yeah, the PCM will need the data from the sensor to calculate how much fuel to send to the injectors. if no data is present, the computer will go into "limp mode". which means that the fuel injectors will get a pre-detemine amount of fuel pulsed to them and everything connected to the computer will revert to a default setting as determined by the manufacturer. You can run the vehicle like this, but in the long run it really isnt feasible. but the choice is yours

Yeah, thats what I figured. So it will run ok without short-term harm, so I can move it around if I need. So I will install the sensor.
Like Wawnosh asked, where is the best place for it? I have dual pipes, each about 5 or 6 feet long, with glass-packs on the ends. I fugure about 4ft from the manifold, like where it was originally. I know it should, but does it have to be between both pipes like the stock pipes were? or can it go in just one side?

The sensor should be placed near the maifold or header collector and it doesn't have to "see" both sides, the computer treats all injectors the same so it'll work fine on 1 side of the motor. I have run my truck this way for about a decade now and I have confirmed it makes no difference with data from my tuner and wideband O2 sensor, the motor runs great and even passes emissions tests.
