Dually rear axle?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-02 AT 09:27 AM (EST)]I got a junk yard ford axle around 7 years ago to replace the dana 60 w/spun yoke race. I don't think it's a dana but it is a Ford axle. The yard where I bought it told me that it came off a emergency responce vehicle. How can I tell if it's set up for dually wheels? ...My original rims are 9.50x16.5, is there a dually rim in that size?.......The axle has drums and they seem to be more tapered than the dana and also has larger studs than original dana.

Dually rear axle?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Dec-02 AT 11:01 AM (EST)]measure the distance between the spring perch and the surface where the wheel bolts on if there is enough room for a dualie wheel with tire to clear it will work. also you will have to have the longer studs if yours are not already those.

some of the 3/4 ton diesels had a dana 70 with large studs but it was NOT wide enough to run duals. if there is only 9" between the spring and wheel bolting surface it will not work, the tire will rub.

hope this helps

edit: oh yeah almost foregot... I don't think they make a dualie wheel in a 16.5 but I could be wrong. I think you can get a dualie in 16" 17.5" and 19.5" with a 8 on 6.5 pattern but I am not sure on the center hole size if they will fit a ford or not.

Dually rear axle?

Thanks for your help and quick responce Star. The studs are long and the drums seem almost 9" deep, lol. I will get under the beast over the Holidays and take a measurment. Do you know if Ford had 16.5" dually rims back then?

well I know that they had 16.5 singles but I have not heard of or seen a 16.5 dual, but that doesn't mean that someone doesn't make one. to the best of my knowledge I don't think there was a 16.5 dual.

just on the old ones (sixties) they had the split rim 16.
everything newer than about 1977 aprox. had 16" drop center style (non split rim type) duals as far as I know. that is until you get into the new trucks and they are diffrent.

there were some larger wheels on the old one ton trucks but they had a diffrent bolt pattern back in the fifties and sixties like a 5 or 6 bolt or somethig strange.

If its a dually axle, you'll know it right away, there is a huge hub that sticks out from the drum where the wheels bolt on. Single rear wheel axles dont have that extension on there, at least none that I have seen anyways. Good luck with it.

SoCal: I think you just haven't seen a SRW truck with a full floating axle, mine has it, but, there isn't room for duals on it.

jsorg76F250: You most likley have a Ford 10.25, mine has 9/16" studs that are 2½" long... The brake drums are about 6" wide, and, the total inner edge of brake drum to outside of hub measurement is 10½". If you have a FF 10.25, the drums and hubs are 2 seperate pieces, no more messy brake jobs...

I know I have newer style as the drums are seperate from the hub. The truck is a 4x4 and I think it has narrow width frame. I won't get under it till after Christmass. But I bet there is room for dually rim. I just was wondering what I should be warry of if I do it. I would like to find 16.5" rims so I can keep my tires.

F100SWB, the truck I have here is an F350 single rear wheel, and the truck I had before that was a dually, though not a Ford dually, it was a Dana axle. The 2 axles were quite different from eachother in the drum/hub area, the dually being visibly wider. At any rate, I imagine one could put a 16.5 inch 3/4ton wheel on a dually axle, it would just stick out alot further than normal and probly cause some sheetmetal interference.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=11400&.jpg This is my first attempt at posting a pic. Does anyone know if this is a dually type axle?

That doesnt look to me to be wide enough to be a dually rear drum/hub. The distance from the hub where the wheel mounts to the inside of the brake drum is quite wide on a dually, like 4 or 5 inches wider than on a 3/4 ton. The picture is small and doesnt show the whole thing, but that doesnt look like a dually drum to me.

Dually rear axle?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-02 AT 01:41 AM (EST)]SoCal: To make things even more confusing, a cab and chassis dually axle is narrower than a standard full floater, due to the C&C having a narrower frame. The 10.25 in my F250, and the dually 10.25 in the 89 F350 company truck(cab and chassis) are almost identical, no difference in the hubs whatsoever, however, the dually axle is narrower...
If that F250 has the narrow frame(76 should be a High Boy) I could see the C&C axle bolting up due to it's also having a narrow frame.
If it's from a C&C, it's definatley a dually axle.

However, that drum looks something like what's on mine... If I can get it inside and yank a wheel off, I'll take a few pics of mine.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=11401&.jpg This is about the best I can do, just learning about posting pics . I'm not sure what rating this axle has, but I know it's strong. I was hoping it was for dually wheels?

Dually rear axle?

Ok I dont have any experience with narrow frame cab/chassis trucks. The Dana 70 axle in my dually had drums that, measured from the inside edge to the surface that the wheel bolts to, were quite wide, I want to say like a foot wide or so. They were huge, much wider than iether the corp 14bolt axle drums on my 3/4 ton Chevy or the 10.25" SRW axle drums on the F350 I have now. For a dually pickup (not cab/chassis) the total width from the wheel mounting flange on the hub of one side of the truck to the wheel mounting flange on the other side of the truck would have to be about 8 inches or so wider than on a 3/4 ton or SRW one ton because of the way the dually wheels dish, since the inside tires on the dually pickup are still in the same position in relation to the body of the truck as a SRW trucks tires would be. That's why I say that drum/axle is not a dually axle. Now this fiasco with the cab/chassis thing I guess could throw a whole monkey into the situation if they are spacing the inside tires closer in than on a pickup. Anyways, I dont wanna start a fight here, I was just trying to help.

looking at the new pic you put of of the whole truck, that couldnt be a dually rear axle I dont think. If it was a dually axle from a cab/chassis with a narrow frame, you would have had to remount the spring perches to make that axle fit on that truck I would think, because of the different frame widths. That axle doesnt look as wide as the one on my old dually, the drums are too skinny. But I dont doubt that it is plenty strong for that truck and what you are using it for.

Have you tried mounting regular 3/4 ton wheels on it? How do they fit on the truck? Doe they stick the tire out too far? How far out (toward the inside) do the drums stick out from the inner edge of the wheel? Looking at the axle in relation to the truck, its hard to tell from the angle of the pic, but the wheel mounting surface does look like it sticks out pretty far for a regular single wheel and tire to fit within the wheel well and not stick out from the truck. Maybe Im the one who's confusing myself... LOL
