My Mentor............

People have asked me why I work so hard at my age (60) This man is one reason. Hank and I formed a great friendship about 30 years ago when we were both engineers working for a food equipment manufacturer. This guy is a dynamo! Up and working everyday at 4 am, always trying to make things better. I've done R&D for his company, and have always been treated fairly and payed on time with generous bonuses. It it is very nice to see him still going strong at 85!

Fascinating bio about Mr. Svehaug. Thanks for sharing that.

I laughed at this line though:

One day, he recalls, his boss said: "You're a Norwegian. You can stand the smell of fish. Why don't you go after the seafood business for us?"
Say something like that today and you'd probably be sued....

Do you still work with him or at least keep in touch?

I still work with him on a regular basis, and my uncle still works for him and he's 78! Wife and I went to his wifes funeral a month ago and there where over 700 people there. The funeral was so large they had to have it in the Highschool gym! I owe the man a lot..................

Sounds like your boss is a great guy.

I'm not so sure I like the idea of knowing that beef cattle are being raised on pig poop though.

Hank is not my boss.............He has his own company, and I have my own. We do collaborate on some R&D projects tho. He also owns 10 percent of a company that I founded that is in the process of developing a new process for dairy farms.

I consider myself very lucky to have worked with some great people that were willing to pass along their knowledge!

I have a long list of folks like that who have touched me in some way. Trouble is, I'm getting older and I'm not around those types any more.

Fantastic post! I've always told people younger than myself that no one gets through life successfully alone. Everyone needs a mentor and everyone is obligated to become a mentor. Even if that means getting a boot in the a$$ occasionally.

I've been very lucky to have worked with a lot of very smart people that always took the time to explain the why's and how's of things. I try and give back as much as I received and have helped many "young bucks" see things in a different way.

One of the things that has kept me here on FTE is the fact that most people on here give freely of their knowledge and experiences, and are like family to one another.

Something to kind of add to this, my dad is 66 and he's an auto body man..yes he's still doing this full time.

As a kid he'd toss me in the back of his 65 Mustang, later sold and bought a 63 Ford Fairlane and take me to car shows & the races. From that time on I had always wanted to me in automotive in some way.

So fast forward 30yrs later and now I'm a marketing guy in the automotive industry full time and I love going to work. This past weekend my dad and I took my 6 year old son Colin to the Saturday night races,he had a ball.It was kind of cool having three generations on us sitting there.

Great story Tony! This is partly my reason for starting this thread. It's always good to look back at the people who helped shape our lives, and I was hoping to get others to relate their stories of the special people in their lives.

I have 3 grandkids ( and another grandson on the way!) and they have been to the boat drags, our local sprint car track, and 2 local 1/4 mile tracks with the whole family. The look on their faces...........Priceless!
