I finally got dad's old F-350 home! Its a '92 4X4 the 7.3L diesel and as you can see it comes with plenty of rust. I got it after the torque converter seal went out and ATF comes out in streams from the front of the tranny at idle. The tranny is only five years old and doesnt even have 30k on it. Its an E4OD so from what I've heard its common for that seal to leak. Now I have to decide wether to part the truck out and keep the axles for my '78, fix the truck up for work, or put the '78 body on the F-350 chassis and keep the diesel. I've got alot of work ahead for sure, but I don't think I could bring myself to sell a diesel motor thats only got 122k on it...
There is a guy not to far from home who's offering a complete ZF with transfer case and flywheel and clutch pedal for $300, but that cheap makes me wonder...
I vote for buying the ZF, putting it in the bed of the diesel, and seeing if you can make it to my neck of the woods with your ATF leak, and let me see if I can cram it all in my F-150!
just a heads-up on the ZF5 swap, you need a transmission from a diesel truck, a big block bellhousing bolt pattern ain't the same! I vote for keeping the diesel and transplanting it in the '78, or just droping the '78 body on this truck's chassis.
If I do the '78 conversion it would likely be simply ( or so stated ) putting the body on the F-350's frame, and yes the ZF is from a diesel; $300 seems cheap though, I thought I've seen people selling the tranny alone for over $500. This guy will sell me just about everything I need for the swap except the master and slave cylinders. If the E4OD is a good enough transmission for general duty and say 33" tires, I've got both steering columns for the '78 so I could make manual or auto work. I'd just have to rig up a separate switch for the OD off. If it wasn't a daily driver and instead more of a seasonal workhorse, wouldn't a T19 be a better choice? Or is the ZF just as durable? That granny gear would sure make it pull hard with the T19.
