My AC sometimes comes on right away and sometimes doesn't want to work until I get to highway speed. Even then, it cuts out from time to time for a few minutes. In town or at stops, it seems to go to sleep.
I've always ran it for a few minutes each week as I learned as a youngster that this was the way to keep the seals lubricated and keep them from drying out a causing a leak. I don't know if technology has caught up and this is no longer necessary.
What could cause the AC to develop a mind of its own like this?
Mine was doing the same thing your describing. I found a thread where someone said you can take the gap spacer off the compresor. I did this and the a/c works flawlessly so far. I'll see if I can find that thread for you.
Have you checked the air gap on the a/c clutch? Excessive gap can cause intermittent operation. Is the a/c system properly charged? A bad pressure switch or connection can cause this also. I asume the fan and vents are working, just no cold air.
EDIT: Glenn's got you covered on the air gap. Just check it out and let us know what you find.
